Glasses and the Grains Within... (Guest Blog)

Time. The healer of all wounds and money’s equivalent...its existence and use truly is everything.

Time is one of those things that doesn't have much value to you when you are a child. You know that you want to spend as much time as possible playing outside, beating the top score your favorite video game and the least amount of time doing homework, but that’s all that you were really concerned about when it comes to time.

Come to think of it, it is similar to money in this aspect …did any of us have a true sense of money a child either? All we knew was that our parents had it and that it could be used to get stuff….candy, toys, sneakers and clothes that would make us look cool on the first day of school.

Yes, time and money do have their similarities, which explains why they are so commonly brought up in the same conversations. We have all heard that time is money….but money will NEVER be time.

It wasn't until recently that I truly realized the value of time. I will be 25 in a couple of months and though yes, that is still young, it really puts things into perspective. Today, while talking to a friend, we began to discuss how oblivious we were as kids about age. I personally remember thinking that 25 was soooo old! I was sure that at 25 I would be super wise, well-traveled and experienced. To my slight disappointment, I still have much to learn, many places to go and so much more to experience to even be somewhat near where I thought I would be at 25.

Lately, I have become so aware of the concept of time that I compare it to purchases. $30 shirt? That’s 2 hours of my time when put into an hourly wage perspective. Is it worth it? Would I be content if my supervisor handed me this same shirt after 2 hours of work (and a few additional minutes, due to those damn taxes)?

Have you ever driven past an auto accident that just happened and thought to yourself, had I not spent those extra couple of minutes searching for my keys, that could have been me? Or on a less serious note…..have you ever prepared an amazing dinner for guests only to leave it in the oven for too long and have to order take out?

What about love? Time……… money …….and love….they make the world go round, don’t they? You may ask, what does time have to do with love? Well, what doesn't it? It is probably the single most important factor when it comes to finding that significant other. Your interests change with time, your values and morals too. You may realize now that it’s probably a good thing that you didn't end up with your high school crush. Are you happily married? What if you showed up late to the function that you met your wife/husband at and missed them? Unhappily married? What if you met your true love the day after your wedding? Have you ever met a great potential lover but your recent situation didn't allow you to keep them in your life? Maybe it’s to that person’s good fortune that you were unavailable because they later found their true love.  It’s one big circle…and it goes it a clockwise direction.

As crazy as it may sound, I felt some type way on my 24th birthday. It was supposed to be a celebration and it was but I couldn't help but think, “jeez, I’m supposed to be so much more further along, so much more sure of myself and where I’m going”. Not to mention being even closer to the big and scary 3-0. But I have grown greatly in the past year, and I am so excited for my upcoming growth, accomplishments and experiences. In the midst of my excitement, I grieve the millions who will never come to see a 24th birthday and pray that I make it to my 30th and further. I am ready for the rest of my life and all of the money (or lack of) and love that my time on this earth entails. Timing. Is. Everything. Be aware of its power and use it wisely.
